Selected Tool Patents

Patent documents can provide important insight to the development of a tool or class of tools. This page will show selected patents for hand tools and related areas, mostly from the earlier years of the 20th century.

Introduction

New and innovative tools are often patented, and the corresponding patent documents can provide interesting background on the development of the tool. The patent will often include a discussion of the problem to be solved, and may cite other prior patents of interest. Having the patent document may also help to determine the date of manufacture for a tool, especially if the tool has a "Pat. Pend." (or equivalent) marking.

However, sometimes it can be difficult to determine the relevant patent number, especially for older tools that are outside of the searchable range of patent records. For example, there is no straightforward way to find a patent number just from the name of the company that makes an item. Even a knowledge of the patent date (a common way of citing patents on older tools) may still require looking through a large number of document images.

In this page we present a table of patents for hand tools and related items, selected mostly from the early years of the 20th century. The patents were chosen for a number of reasons; some were especially innovative or influential, others were assigned to companies of interest, and some were found on particular tools in the Alloy Artifacts collection.

Although example tools are available for some of the patents in this table, we have not included links to the supplementary information, in order to avoid cluttering the table. Readers looking specifically for examples of patented tools should check our related Table of Patented Tools.


Notes on Table Entries

Each row in the table provides a brief summary of a specific patent, including the patent number, class, inventor, assignee (if any), filing date, issue date, and a short description. The rows are ordered by issue date, the natural order used by the USPTO in the patent numbers.

The patent number is a link to the Google Patent Search summary page, which allows you examine the patent documents and illustrations using a web browser. The Google service is relatively new, and some pages may have only partial information or obvious errors from the automated scanning process. However, it appears to work well for most patents, and offers a very convenient way to examine the patent information.

Patent numbers prefixed with an "RE" code are so-called Re-issue Patents, a provision for revising a patent's claims without extending its scope. Patents beginning with a "D" are Design Patents, a claim for an ornamental or artistic form without (necessarily) any utility.

The Class column indicates the patent's primary classification code, a value assigned by the USPTO that may be useful when searching for patents on similar items. The USPTO website has extensive tables of the classification codes, and if you're planning to do frequent patent searches, it would be worthwhile to become familiar with the classification system.

The Assignee column, if present, indicates the company with the legal rights to the patent. Comments within square brackets [] in the Assignee column indicate that the patent was found on a particular tool, but that no formal assignment was listed in the patent document.
